Ideal Weight for Height

Height is the main input in classic ideal body weight formulas. Once you know your height, an ideal weight calculator estimates a reference weight for that stature — often used as a screening or dosing baseline, not as a personal goal by itself. Muscle, frame size, and health history can place a healthy person well above or below any single estimate.

If you want a range instead of one number, pair this tool with Pedzah’s BMI Calculator or Healthy Weight Calculator.

Ideal Body Weight by Height

The table below uses the same Devine method as one of the calculator results, plus the BMI 18.5–24.9 healthy band for each height. Values are estimates generated by Pedzah’s formulas — not a clinical standard.

Heights below about 152 cm (5 ft) are omitted because these IBW formulas are defined for taller adults.

Ideal Weight for Men

Ideal weight for men is estimated with male-specific base weights in each formula. At the same height, men’s estimates are usually higher than women’s because the published equations start from a higher baseline. Strength training, larger bone structure, or higher lean mass can make a healthy man’s actual weight differ from the chart without meaning anything is “wrong.”

For energy needs after you have a weight estimate, try the Calorie Calculator or BMR Calculator.

Ideal Weight for Women

Ideal weight for women uses the female equations in Robinson, Miller, Devine, and Hamwi. Those formulas still ignore pregnancy, menopause, athletic body composition, and many other factors that affect what weight is appropriate for an individual. Use the calculator’s sex setting to switch estimates, and treat the result as a reference — not a prescription.

Ideal Weight Chart

An ideal weight chart is simply a height-to-weight lookup built from a chosen formula. The chart above is consistent with Pedzah’s Devine calculation and lists a healthy BMI band beside each row so you can compare a single IBW point with a wider range. Charts are estimates for education; they are not a universal medical standard and should not replace advice from a clinician.

Healthy Weight by Height

A healthy weight by height is often described as a range — commonly BMI 18.5–24.9 for adults in many public-health screening tools — rather than one ideal number. Ideal body weight formulas give a single estimate; BMI ranges give a band. Neither measures fat vs muscle, and neither diagnoses health on its own.

For total daily energy after choosing a weight goal, see the TDEE Calculator. Informational only — not medical advice. Results are estimates. Consult a qualified clinician for health decisions.

Formula estimates start from height and sex. Pair them with resting energy from the BMR calculator when you plan nutrition around a reference weight.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is an ideal body weight?+

Ideal body weight (IBW) is an estimated reference weight based mainly on height and sex. Pedzah shows several classic formulas so you can see how estimates differ — not a single “correct” medical target.

How is ideal weight calculated?+

This calculator uses Robinson (1983), Miller (1983), Devine (1974), and Hamwi (1964). Each starts from a base weight at 5 feet and adds a fixed amount per inch of height above that. It also shows a healthy BMI range (18.5–24.9) for the same height.

What is the ideal weight for my height?+

Enter your height and sex above to get estimates for your height. You can also skim the ideal weight chart further down the page for common heights. Results are approximate and not personalized medical guidance.

Is ideal body weight the same for men and women?+

No. These formulas use different base weights (and sometimes different per-inch increments) for males and females at the same height, so estimated ideal weight for men and women usually differs.

Is ideal body weight the same as a healthy weight?+

Not necessarily. IBW is a single-point estimate from height and sex. A healthy weight by height is often described as a range (for example BMI 18.5–24.9). Body composition, fitness, and clinical context matter more than any one number.
